Partant de rien, subtile et souple comme une liane, rapide, la corde du violon qui a touché le cœur et les nerfs du personnage a d’emblée mis en résonance l’âme du livre.

Miranda sits in the kitchen thumping her tail to show her appreciation, while Ariel’s tongue lolls, savouring the melody. At the end of the programme an hour later, the children storm out of their houses to play. Elisha and the dogs join them.
Premilla sits in the kitchen counting the tea leaves at the bottom of the cup. She can’t read what they predict but inwardly sees life’s emptiness.

D’une ligne à l’autre, la musique du texte passe d’une corde sur l’autre, du dialogue à la narration, d’un personnage à l’autre, des paroles aux voix intérieures sans rupture, musicalement, sur les cordes tendues. Sans guillemets, sans tirets, les voix se succèdent, se côtoient, se recouvrent, s’éteignent, resurgissent. Le texte écrit, dessine, traverse, aspire et fuit les paysages, les lieux, les époques, les sentiments, change de voies en absorbant les heurts, comme fait le train entre les segments des rails.
Plus tard, le livre et le train vont à se confondre, puis à se perdre.

Le livre s’ouvre sur la musique.
Plus précisément, la musique ouvre ce livre, elle y fait une effraction insidieuse. C’est une musique qui vient rencontrer le personnage principal, Premilla. Coller à sa chair.

Music curls its way down the corridor, engraves itself into her half awakened senses, tiptoes and steps tentatively on to the counterpane and stares at her. Premilla turns, draws the bedding over her head to shut out the sound, but it penetrates the blankets, forcing her heartstrings to strum with the rhythm of the violin. The melody brings no joy. It revives something so deep and profound that she holds her breath, slides deeper under the sheet and blankets, to brush away the melancholy sensation that has misted the sunny morning into gloomy dullness. Then, the solemn vow made on the eve of her wedding returns, flames through the coverings, arrows into her heart. Its overpowering stab begins piercing and consuming her.

Mais cela dit aussi que la matière du texte est musique. Sans elle le texte ne pourrait pas jouer son rôle de rédemption. La fiction, le roman, la poésie n’auraient pas leur sens le plus profond, ou ne nous en permettrait pas l’accès.
De ce roman qui s’ouvre ainsi dans la musique, on ne sait pas s’il sera une plainte, un lamento, quelle danse, quelle jubilation peut-être ou quel silence adviendront.
Mais on entre en lui – peut-être même sans le savoir – par sa musique.
