It’s always like this on Sunday mornings. I’m aroused to the sound of loud music at eight o’clock. Then frustration and dissatisfaction tear me apart, inciting me to get up and to disappear from this house forever. If there was a way, I’d not hesitate. But I am trapped.
She steps out of bed. Walks barefoot in her night dress to the dining room to tell Vijay not to switch on the radio so early on a Sunday morning.
I like to listen to classical music on the SABC before the Indian programme starts, he says without looking up from grading papers.
Nine o’clock, every Sunday morning, the neighbourhood vibrates with music. East west, north south, uphill downhill, right and left radios are heard in full blast. It is the only occasion when they listen to the latest Indian musical hits.
Miranda sits in the kitchen thumping her tail to show her appreciation, while Ariel’s tongue lolls, savouring the melody. At the end of the programme an hour later, the children storm out of their houses to play. Elisha and the dogs join them.
Premilla sits in the kitchen counting the tea leaves at the bottom of the cup. She can’t read what they predict but inwardly sees life’s emptiness.
